Laura Schneider

Artist Statement

My paintings focus on light, colour, and reflection. I am drawn to glass objects because they constantly change depending on their surroundings, creating distortions, reflections, and unexpected relationships between colour and shape.

Working from observation, I use oil paint to study these shifting effects and to slow down the act of looking. What interests me is not only the object itself, but the way light transforms it. Transparent surfaces can reflect, refract, disappear, or become intensely present within the same image.

My background in photography and film has influenced the way I approach composition and lighting. I am interested in moments where familiar objects become visually ambiguous, revealing details that might otherwise have been overlooked.

Through painting, I aim to explore the tension between realism and perception, using ordinary subjects as a way to investigate the complexity of seeing.
